چکیده

This paper provides an empirical demonstration for a practical approach of efficiency evaluation against the background of limited data availability in some regulated industries. Here, traditional DEA may result in a lack of discriminatory power when high numbers of variables but only limited observations are available. We apply PCADEA for radial efficiency measurement to US natural gas transmission companies in 2007. This allows us to reduce dimensions of the optimization problem while maintaining most of the variation in the original data. Our results suggest that the PCA-DEA methodology reduces the probability of over-estimation of the individual firm-specific performance. It also allows for a large number of original variables without substantially reducing the discriminatory power of the model. JEL-Codes: C14, L51, L95

Applying Network Data Envelopment Analysis to Determine a Criterion for Benchmarking in Regional Electricity Companies of Iran.

One of the effective methods for improving the efficiency of an organization is benchmarking against successful organizations. Not only benchmarking could be a technique for identifying problems but also it greatly helps managers in relations of the design of processes. Among strategic and infrastructure industries in each country, the electricity industry is one of the most important and criti...

Considering undesirable variables in PCA-DEA method: a case of road safety evaluation in Iran

This paper presents a deterministic approach for performance assessment of different province’s road safety level at Iran. A data envelopment analysis (DEA) model considering undesirable input and output indices and a multivariate statistical method, principle component analysis (PCA) are used in this paper, while previous studies do not use composite PCA-DEA method and undesirable input and ou...

Benchmarking of service quality with data envelopment analysis

This paper proposes a data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach to measurement and benchmarking of service quality. Dealing with measurement of overall service quality of multiple units with SERVPERF as multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM), the proposed approach utilizes DEA, in particular, the pure output model without inputs. The five dimensions of SERVPERF are considered as outputs of the...

Data Envelopment Analysis as Nonparametric Least-Squares Regression

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is known as a nonparametric mathematical programming approach to productive efficiency analysis. In this paper we show that DEA can be alternatively interpreted as nonparametric least squares regression subject to shape constraints on frontier and sign constraints on residuals. This reinterpretation reveals the classic parametric programming model by Aigner and C...

Benchmarking Facility Management by Relative Efficiency

Benchmarking is often claimed to be a powerful means of continuous improvement for facility managers but benchmarking tools in facility management are less developed than for other services businesses. The most common information which Facility Managers can get from benchmarking results is their positions of performance. Rankings on performance, without further analysis, cannot help much for th...
